Original Grandragons Team June 1998 in Alcan tent
Who Can Join:
• Membership is open to men or women, 50 years of age and over, in reasonably good health
• Dragon boating does require stamina, but our practices are an excellent source of improved cardio-vascular performance; to participate in competitions you need to be able to clamber on and off a variety of docks
• Prospective members are welcome to try us out for two practices, before joining the club
• If you are already a dragon boat paddler, you are welcome to join us for a try out anytime during the year
• If you have no dragon boat experience, it is best to try out in the shoulder seasons (February, March, April, September, October and November) when we are not building for the racing season. Alternately, taking lessons may enable you to join us during the racing season. False Creek Community Centre has a seniors’ dragon boat class and
lessons are also available through Creekside
• We welcome experienced drummers and steers people or those willing to learn
Overview:
• Grandragons practice twice a week, Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00am to 12:00am, February to November inclusive (rain or shine). We meet at the Alder Bay dock on Granville Island, just behind the False Creek Community Centre and tennis courts. (Map). Grandragons maintain the False Creek Racing Canoe Club dragon boats as part of our boat rental; practices start an hour earlier on boat cleaning days
• Our team includes a wide range of paddling abilities and our coaches help each one of us paddle to the best of our ability.
• We compete locally and away and have been successful in both senior and open divisions. All members are encouraged to participate in competitions, but it is not mandatory.
• Members are encouraged to volunteer with our fund raising events.
• Social events with Grandragons members and their partners are an important part of our team experience See:

• Fees are $299/Year (Pro-rated for New Members). These fees are supplemented by revenue from fund raising events, primarily introducing dragon boating to school kids.
• Annual fees pay for boats, paddles and PDF’s, coaching and regatta fees.
